One number is getting all the attention: ChatGPT now drives 92.4% of all AI referral traffic. It's a real finding, drawn from 6.77 million sessions. But it's not the number that should change how you work โ€” that one is buried three charts down.

The study: Previsible analysed 6.77 million AI-referred sessions across 166 GA4 properties โ€” SaaS, e-commerce, finance, legal, health, insurance, education, publishing and more โ€” from November 2024 to May 2026. We read the full report and pulled the numbers that matter for brands below.

Key findings

  • ChatGPT owns the channel โ€” 92.4% of AI referral traffic. Every other engine combined is under 8%.
  • It's basically a monopoly, and growing โ€” AI referral sessions rose ~9.9x in 19 months; ChatGPT alone grew 12.8x.
  • The buried finding โ€” 28.8% of ChatGPT's traffic lands on your internal search pages. AI trusts your domain, not your specific page.
  • Small now, worth more than its size โ€” AI is ~1% of total traffic but converts roughly 4โ€“5x better than Google organic.

1. It's not "AI search." It's ChatGPT.

Marketers keep talking about spreading effort across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. The data says stop spreading yourself thin. One engine takes almost everything.

The competitive story underneath is brutal. Perplexity peaked in March 2025 and has fallen 61% since. Copilot collapsed 96% from its 2025 high. The one riser is Claude โ€” up 64x off a tiny base, and it quietly overtook Perplexity in March 2026, likely riding its use inside coding and professional tools.

2. The channel is compounding fast

Small today doesn't mean small tomorrow. ChatGPT's monthly referral sessions in this dataset went from 47,606 to 610,910 โ€” a 12.8x jump โ€” and total AI referrals peaked at 644,478 sessions in May 2026.

3. The buried finding: AI knows your brand, not your page

Here's the stat worth sitting with. Nearly a third of ChatGPT's referral traffic โ€” 28.8% โ€” lands on internal search result pages. Not a product page. Not a blog post. The site's own search box.

Where ChatGPT drops its visitors

28.8% โ†’ internal search

Why does this happen? Because search-pattern models like ChatGPT and Gemini trust domains broadly but struggle with page-level specificity. The AI is confident your brand is the right answer. It just isn't sure which of your URLs to send the person to, so it hands them your search and lets them finish the job.

What if my site doesn't have a search box?

Fair point โ€” most don't. The search-box pattern shows up mainly on sites with prominent internal search, like e-commerce and large publishers. If yours doesn't have one, the same instinct just surfaces differently: AI links your homepage or a category page instead of the exact right one, or for a local business, it names you and points to your Google Business Profile. Either way the lesson holds โ€” the model trusts your brand, not a specific URL.

The practical read: AI recommends brands and domains, not individual pages. Being the name the model trusts matters more than any single perfectly-optimised URL.

4. It's small. It punches way above its weight.

AI referrals are still only about 1% of total traffic โ€” easy to dismiss. Don't. Across 2026 datasets, AI-referred visitors convert far better than Google organic, because the model has already filtered and vetted them before they ever click.

Conversion rate: AI referral vs Google organic

14.2% 2.8% AI referral Google organic ~5x

Sources: AirOps, Pixis, Ahrefs, Emarketed (2026). AI visitors also spend ~68% more time on site.

Put the two facts together: a channel that's compounding at ~10x and converts at several times the rate of organic. The size today is not the point. The trajectory is.

5. Who's actually getting the traffic

AI penetration isn't even across the board. Some verticals are pulling away; one is going backwards.

VerticalWhat the data shows
SMBHighest AI penetration at 1.71% of traffic
Insurance1.51% penetration โ€” up 18.9x
E-commerce37x growth; product pages capture 43% of e-comm AI traffic (buyers arrive purchase-ready)
PublishersThe paradox: they train the models, yet capture ~0.08% of the traffic against 120M+ organic sessions
HealthThe only vertical in decline (0.23% โ†’ 0.17%)

One more finding worth flagging for anyone with a pricing page: "Contact us for pricing" now hurts your AI visibility. Models can't quote what they can't read, so transparent pricing has quietly become an AEO issue.

What this means for your brand

Strip it down to what you can act on:

  • Optimise for ChatGPT first. It's 92% of the channel. Spreading effort evenly across five engines is a rounding-error strategy.
  • Be the named brand, not the perfect page. AI trusts domains โ€” so brand mentions, reviews and credible citations matter more than one polished URL. This is the entire premise of AI search visibility.
  • Fix your internal search. If a quarter of AI visitors land on your search box, that box is now a landing page. Make it work.
  • Publish transparent pricing. "Contact us" is invisible to the models.
  • Start now. The channel is ~1% today and compounding at ~10x. Early beats perfect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which AI engine sends the most referral traffic in 2026?

ChatGPT, by a wide margin. In a study of 6.77 million AI-referred sessions across 166 sites, ChatGPT accounted for 92.4% of all trackable AI referral traffic. Gemini was around 2.8%, Claude 1.3%, Perplexity 1.1%, and Copilot under 0.1%. For most brands, optimising for AI visibility effectively means optimising for ChatGPT first.

Does AI referral traffic actually convert?

Yes, and better than organic search. Across multiple 2026 datasets, AI-referred visitors convert roughly 4 to 5 times higher than Google organic (one study measured 14.2% versus 2.8%), spend about 68% more time on site, and bounce less. They arrive pre-qualified because the AI already vetted and named your brand before the click.

Why does AI traffic land on my internal search pages?

Because the AI trusts your domain but can't always pick the exact right page. The study found ChatGPT sends 28.8% of its traffic to internal search result pages. The model knows your brand is relevant and cites your site, then drops the visitor on your search box to find the specific page. It's a sign AI recommends brands and domains, not individual URLs.

Is AI traffic worth optimising for if it's only about 1% of total traffic?

Yes. AI referrals are still small (around 1% of total traffic) but growing fast โ€” up roughly 9.9x in 19 months โ€” and they convert several times better than organic. The brands that get named by ChatGPT now are building an advantage in a channel that's compounding quickly.
