We analysed 6,270 real answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for 190 businesses across 378 cities. Here is how often AI actually recommends a brand, and what separates the ones it names.
Check your AI visibilityFor a large share of the businesses we tested, AI never surfaced them at all when a buyer asked for a recommendation in their category and city. The rate varies by engine, but on every one, a meaningful chunk of brands simply do not exist as far as the model is concerned.
And when a brand did appear, it was heavily outnumbered: across all answers, AI named competitors roughly five times more often than the brand being searched for.
Here is the hopeful half of the data. When AI did name a business, it usually placed it right at the top. More than half of all mentions were the number one recommendation.
Being named is not a coin flip you cannot influence. It is a position you earn, and once earned, it tends to be a strong one.
The businesses that showed up were not the biggest. They were the most legible to a model. AI pulls from a specific set of signals, and the brands that win have made themselves easy to cite.
Clean, matching business information across Google Business Profile and the directories AI reads. Inconsistency makes a brand hard to trust and cite.
Schema and clearly labelled entities so a model can parse exactly what you do, where, and for whom, without guessing.
Pages written to answer the exact questions buyers ask, not just to read well for a human browsing. Most sites still do the latter.
AI visibility is not luck. The brands that get named made themselves easy to cite, and most of their competitors have not started. That is the opening.
Note on scope: this sample is drawn from businesses that ran a BizLoc8 AI visibility audit, skewed toward local and small-to-mid businesses in India. It is directional rather than a universal census, but the pattern held consistently across all three engines. Figures reflect the data as of the study period and are refreshed periodically.
